2010 Festival, 29 May -12 June

~ All Festival Apprentices receive full scholarships plus housing ~

No further apprentice applications are being accepted.
You may apply only for alternate apprenticeship status.
  • There is no deadline; apprentice positions will be filled as qualified applications are received. (Conductor deadline for application was 31 March 2010)
  • Applications are evaluated solely on merit. (Application materials become the property of the Hot Springs Music Festival and will not be returned.)
  • There is no formal application form. Please submit only the items listed below.
  • Participants for the entire duration of the Festival will receive full scholarships plus housing. (Apprentices choosing not to participate in the entire Festival may attend for a $1750 tuition fee.)
  • Participants must arrive in time for the 5pm orientation meeting on May 29th and remain until the conclusion of the final concert on June 12th (conductors & arts administrators arrive by May 25th).
  • Apprentices are responsible for their own transportation and meals. (Many Hot Springs restaurants–within walking distance–will have musician-friendly menus available.)
  • Apprentices must be at least 18 years of age ~ or ~ provide a chaperone.
-All musicians not playing in one of the orchestras are expected to sing in the chorus-

  • Please indicate if you wish to receive a full scholarship, or, if you would prefer to attend for less than the entire Festival duration and pay the $1750 tuition fee.

Recording (high-quality sound; maximum ten minutes total; labeled with name, instrument, contact information & contents), consisting of:

  • Instrumentalists: If not otherwise indicated below, two representative etudes for your instrument (one fast/one slow) and two brief excerpts that will demonstrate your abilities, OR one recent solo performance. [To resolve application repertoire questions, contact the appropriate mentor via his or her email address listed on the Mentors page of this website.]
  • Bassoon: Three of the following four excerpts - Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 4, II, long solo to end; Ravel, Bolero, solo; Mozart, Marriage of Figaro, Overture, measures 1-8 and measures 156-171; Beethoven, Symphony No. 4, IV, fast solo; A solo piece, concerto or sonata movement of applicant's choice.
  • Clarinet: include standard orchestral excerpts for clarinet, recordings of solo or chamber music may also be included. For clarinet applications, it is not necessary to limit the recording to 10 minutes, but be advised to put the examples of your best playing at the beginning of the CD.
  • Flute: 2 contrasting orchestral excerpts -and- 2 contrasting selections or movements from a concerto, sonata or other significant work; an etude is acceptable for one of the selections. **Entire recording must not exceed 10 minutes**
  • Horn: Solo:1st movement of either Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 or Mozart Horn Concerti
    No. 2 or No. 4; Excerpts: Strauss, "Ein Heldenleben," Horn 1 - Beginning to measure 17; Shostakovich, "Symphony No. 5," Mvmt. I, Horn 1 - third measure after Rehearsal No.17 to
    1st measure of Rehearsal No. 21; Mendelssohn "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Nocturne, Horn 1 - measures 1 through 34; Wagner, "Siegfried's Rhine Journey," Horn 1 -Short Call
  • Oboe: include a selection of 2 standard orchestral excerpts of your choice, plus a solo selection such as movement of a standard concerto or sonata, or a chamber work that showcases the oboe. Alternately, in lieu of orchestral excerpts, submit 2 or more contrasting solo works from a live performance. 10 minute maximum. Quality is preferred over quantity.
  • Percussion: include 3 xylophone excerpts, 3 snare drum excerpts, 2 glockenspiel excerpts, 3 timpani excerpts, 1 Bach marimba solo.
  • Piano/Keyboard: include at least one collaborative work (ie.: chamber music/orchestral). Contact Michael Gurt for more information: <mugurt@lsu.edu>.
  • Trombone: include 2 contrasting solos or contrasting movements of one solo piece and 5 excerpts of your choice.
  • Tuba: (1) include four orchestral excerpts of your choice and (2) include two contrasting selections or movements from a concerto or other solo work; an etude is acceptable for one of the selections. Please consider the 10 minute guideline as a recommendation--quality recordings will not be penalized if they are a bit shorter or longer.
  • Viola: include first movement of a standard solo work or orchestral excerpts.
  • Violoncello: One (or two) movements from the Bach Suites for Cello, the first movement of a standard concerto and two standard orchestral excerpts of contrasting styles.
  • Singers: Due to the current state of the economy, we regret that we will not be able to include a voice apprentice program in our 2010 Festival season. [for 2011:recording of recent works and photograph]
  • Conductors: A high-quality North American-format DVD, CD-ROM or VHS of a recent rehearsal (15-minute maximum) and performance (15-minute maximum) viewed from a close, front-view perspective. Video must be labelled with name, contact information, and repertoire index.
  • Recording Engineers: Recording(s) you have engineered, edited or mastered
  • Administrators: All items minus recording.

Application fee - required of all applicants (except for approved returning scholarship        recipients). It is non-refundable and not applicable toward other fees:
  • Instrumentalists, Singers, Recording Engineers & Administrators - $30.
  • Conductors - $55.
